A Sandbox RPG is a type of roleplaying video game where the roleplaying primarily happens in the interactions between player and environment. To this end, Sandbox RPGs usually feature open worlds and a variety of systems for interacting with it, such as steatlh, simulated economies and different types of crafting. The player's chosen role is expressed through which systems are used when and for what purposes.
Sandbox RPGs prioritise giving the player as much freedom as possible in which character they build and how they solve problems, as opposed to Narrative RPGs, which tend to focus on providing a few options with a lot of associated content and context. Sandbox RPGs have traits in common with immersive sims and survival games, as opposed to Narrative RPGs, which have traits in common with adventure games and visual novels.
